Saline nasal drops can be beneficial for infants and toddlers at the time of nasal congestion. Let's take a look at it in detail,

First, let's talk about the benefits.

Nasal Congestion: Saline nasal drops help thin mucus. It is then easy to remove and allow the baby to breathe more comfortably.
Moist: Saline drops keep the nasal passages moist. And it is helpful during dry weather like winter.
Natural & Safe: There are different decongestant medications available, but saline nasal drops are a natural and safe alternative.

Now you know the benefits, so let's see the usage steps.
1) Wash your hands thoroughly to avoid any contamination.
2) Lay down your baby on their back, head slightly tilted back.
3) Place 1-2 drops in each nostril using a dropper. Make sure it is not more and wait for some time for the saline drops to be effective.
4) Once the mucus is loosened, gently remove it using a nasal aspirator or softly with hands. Or wait for mucus to come out naturally and clean it. Make sure the way you choose should be according to the age of your baby.

Remember, when it comes to babies, the utmost care should be taken.
Usage frequency: Saline drops are safe but overuse can irritate the nasal. So use it when it is needed for the baby to get relief from congestion. Or use it as per your pediatrician's advice.
Hygiene: Make sure that the dropper is clean. Before using nasal drops your hands should be washed thoroughly. Also, try to avoid touching the baby's nose to avoid any contamination.
Homemade Saline Water: If you choose to prepare saline water at home then make sure to use boiled water (and cooled water) and non-iodized salt. Prepared it in a clean vessel and stored in a sterile container.

You should know when to consult a pediatrician instead of solely relying on the saline nasal drops. It is for the right advice at the right time.
(i) If the baby's nasal congestion lasts more than a few days along with fever.
(ii) If the baby is not comfortable with saline water and shows signs of discomfort or irritation post-using saline nasal drops.
(iii) If you observe unusual bloody mucus difficulty in breathing or any new symptoms.

Saline nasal drops are a natural, safe, and effective way to relieve nasal congestion in babies without using medication. But, do make sure you consult your pediatrician before using it and do go for a check-up if other symptoms are observed along with nasal congestion.
